Hades, God of the Underworld

65e3609f2c3b5423444de99b

I really looked forward to portraying the rulers of the underworld with this piece. At first, I had visualized Hades with a bident, but I learned that was a later Roman design, and older, Greek portrayals had Hades with a bird-tipped scepter. I knew I wanted to have him holding his helmet of darkness, or invisibility, as I've rarely, if ever, seen him depicted with this ingenious weapon. I chose to portray Persephone with a blank look of trauma, almost like she's a shadow of her former self.

I am Hades, king of the underworld and shades (spirits). I sit upon my throne holding my bird-tipped scepter and my sacred helmet of invisibility. Beside me sits my abducted wife, Persephone, and at my feet is my ferocious, three-headed guard hound, Cerberus. In the deep, cavernous background flows the river Styx, the sacred boundary separating the land of the living from the dead. Above, fly the Erinyes (Furies), those ancient spirits who seek punishment and vengeance against sinners.
