I really looked forward to portraying the rulers of the underworld with this piece. At first, I had visualized Hades with a bident, but I learned that was a later Roman design, and older, Greek portrayals had Hades with a bird-tipped scepter. I knew I wanted to have him holding his helmet of darkness, or invisibility, as I've rarely, if ever, seen him depicted with this ingenious weapon. I chose to portray Persephone with a blank look of trauma, almost like she's a shadow of her former self.
