Demeter, Goddess of Agriculture

65e3609f2c3b5423444de999

In this piece, I wanted to focus on the myth of Demeter's daughter, Persephone, and their connection to the ancient cult of Eleusis. This is a somewhat rare instance of me creating a more symmetrical composition, but if I could do it over I would go asymmetrical. I do think the smoke from the torches creates good movement for our eyes to follow the Kykeon drink. I am also happy with the flat, graphic quality of her hair. It almost has an Art Deco feel, though it wasn't my conscious intention.

I am Demeter, the goddess of harvest, agriculture, fertility, and grains. I stand as the central figure in the mystery Cult of Eleusis, where citizens partake in a festival and initiation ritual tied to the myth of my daughter Persephone’s abduction by Hades to reign by his side as queen of the underworld. With my daughter's absence in Winter, I fall into grief and the earth becomes barren, but upon her return in the spring, my joy replenishes the land. Assisting me in my search for my daughter is triple-bodied Hekate, the goddess of magic who becomes Persephone's attendant in the underworld.
