Abduction of Persephone

66289688145ead4a1eb8a23e

This tragic scene holds a fondness for me, as I remember doing a sketch for it twenty years ago during my University days at Parsons in New York City. One glorious day after walking through the Metropolitan Museum of Art, (I must have encountered this myth in the Greek section), I found myself sketching away on the subway ride back to my dorm. The composition of that initial sketch has always stayed with me, so when I was able to revive the image in my head for this book it was a really cool full-circle moment in my life as an artist.

I, Persephone, goddess of Spring and daughter of Zeus and Demeter, lament my abduction by Hades, as told in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. While picking flowers, I am kidnapped by the lord of the underworld, and despite my cries, only Hekate and Helios witness the event. My mother, Demeter, searches for me in grief, neglecting her duties and causing the earth to wither. Eventually, I am allowed to return to Demeter for part of the year, explaining the cycle of the seasons, but I remain bound to the underworld due to eating a pomegranate seed.
