Erinyes, Goddesses of Retribution

65e3609f2c3b5423444de97f

I believe this is the darkest, and most horror-esque piece I have done on this project, and I really leaned into the terrifying aspects of the Erinyes to portray something that would scare the viewer. I used a tragedy mask design for the middle figure, hoping it would convey a certain sense of dread and lament. For the foreground figure, I chose to have her emerging from the bloody cesspool as a reference to their births from Uranus' blood. Since childhood, I've been a fan of horror films, so I always relish the opportunity to lean into these darker portrayals when I get the chance.

We are the three dreaded underworld Goddesses of vengeance, the Erinyes, also known as the Furies. We hunt and persecute criminals, driving them mad, infecting them with disease, and even a town harboring a criminal may suffer hunger or plague. According to the playwright Aeschylus, we have gorgon like features and snakes entwined in our hair and arms. Later authors describe us with long black tunics, wings, blood dripping form our eyes, and brandishing snaky whips.
