Sacred Boons

I was quite proud of my original version of this image with the sea nymphs (which I've included in the process images) until i discovered that the "nymphs" that gifted Perseus his tools and weapons were the Hesperides. So, with a desire to keep things as accurate as possible, I went back and redesigned the bottom half of the image to reflect the sunset goddesses and their golden apples and guarding dragon. I think of this as an example of "failing forward." It's better to push forward with less than perfection and create momentum than to be constantly fearful of perfection and have it slow down the momentum. Mistakes like this are inevitable.

I, Perseus, seeking divine tools, am guided to the far western lands into the garden of the Hesperides who offer sacred objects to assist me in my quest; winged sandals for flight, Hades’ helmet of invisibility, and a knapsack called a “Kibisis” to transport the severed head of Medusa.

To behead Medusa, Hermes offers me a sickle sword called a harpe, made of adamantine, an indestructible, diamond-like metal. Athena offers me a shimmering, bronze shield to use as a mirror and avoid looking directly into the Gorgon’s petrifying gazes. Now with my sacred tools and weapons, I fly to the far west beyond Oceanus, to the cursed land of Medusa and her Gorgon sisters.
