Zeus Battles Typhoeus

65e3609f2c3b5423444de979

I always have a blast designing and illustrating monsters, and it doesn't get much more epic in scale than Typhon! I chose to make Zeus quite small to show contrast in scale between the enemies, and make Typhon more imposing. I also chose a composition which has Zeus surrounded by the limbs of Typhon, to express a feeling of being trapped. I'm always trying to push my compositional skills to new heights, and you may notice I favor asymmetric compositions to create visual interest. I knew I wanted Typhon to be red, so I chose a complementary green for the background, and the oranges and yellows for fire and lightning bolt as bright spot color focal points. I'm really proud to have illustrated this more obscure monster and battle, as there haven't been many visual depictions of this scene by artists throughout history, surprisingly.

After I, Zeus, and my siblings imprison the Titans in the shadowy depths of Tartarus, we find our dominion seemingly secure. Yet, from the dark union of Gaia and Tartarus arises a new adversary: Typhon, a fearsome and mighty storm god, who seeks supremacy over the cosmos. The heavens tremble as Typhon and I engage in a titanic struggle, with the seas raging, lightning flashing, and scorching winds howling. All of Olympus quakes under the ferocity of our clash. But with the power of my thunderbolts, I ultimately vanquish the rebellious god, hurling Typhon down through the charred earth to join his defeated kin in the abyss of Tartarus.
