Gate to Hades

The tone and feeling I want to convey with this image is “foreboding.” I wanted the bone white dead tree to be a graphic element for contrast, and the red poppies to offer some color variety. This image shifted quite a bit from my initial sketches. The journey of every art piece is different. Sometimes the image may not be clear at the earliest stage, and in that case, It’s good to retain some flexibility to experiment and explore options while in the painting phase.

But I, Orpheus, am not satisfied to sit in solitary mourning. There is a great injustice in the death of my love Eurydice. If the beasts and rocks of the wild woods of Olympia bow before my song, might not the spirits of the underworld? Could Lord Hades and Queen Persephone not be moved as well? If my song is powerful enough, perhaps they will take pity on me and my lost love. Determined, I set out in search of the dark gate to Hades. Many days later, standing before that gaping black maw, I shiver. I may never return to the land of the living. I step through, ready to risk all.
