One of the many benefits of this book project was doing a deep dive into characters and myths that I was less familiar with, and the Amazons are a perfect example. Learning of their tragic, intertwined tales with Greek heroes has been truly fascinating. In my introduction image, I wanted Oretra to be raised up as the Queen mother over her warriors, and Ares and Harmonia float above; the progenitors. Initially, the image was a little too simplified in the color range, limited to oranges and reds, so on the advice of a friend, I added more color and temperature contrast with the cooler purple-grey smoke. It's always amazing how the cool vs warm color temperatures color theory can add a dynamic and playful sort of tension in a painting.
