Hermes, Messenger of the Gods

65e3609f2c3b5423444de99e

This image was a blast as Hermes is one of my personal favorite Greek gods. A true ally to mortals and travelers in particular, I'm a fan of his mischievous, trickster persona. In this image, I wanted to pay tribute to his mother's connection to constellations and the properties of his magical staff. This entire series was such a good challenge, as I was tasked with portraying the personality of each god. In this case, I chose to portray Hermes with a sort of child-like wonder, which I think suits him. As the divine Herald it made sense to have him floating in the sky with his winged sandals and helmet, forged by Hephaestos.

I am Hermes, herald messenger of my father Zeus, and God of commerce, travelers, and trade. My mother is Maia, one of the nymph Pleiades, who, with her sisters, eventually become a constellation. I am born in secret, in a cave in Arcadia, where I crawl out and promptly kill a tortoise and cleverly build the first lyre. I next mischievously steal Apollo's cattle and only calm his fury by offering him the lyre as a gift of truce.
