Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt

65e3609f2c3b5423444de997

Artemis is another one of my favorite Greek Gods, and I took special pleasure in portraying her as a wild hunter in the moonlit forest surrounded by her sacred animals. The animals below her posed a little bit of a challenge, as illustrating things from a foreshortening perspective can cause me trouble sometimes. I was also super excited to incorporate the Artemis of Ephesus statue into the piece, which I was lucky enough to see in person when I visited Turkey in 2019. I also used this opportunity to mirror her pose with my illustration of her twin brother Apollo, to create a pair of images that complimented each other with symmetry.

I am Artemis, the virgin goddess of hunting, wild animals, childbirth, and twin sister to Apollo. Although a healer of young girls, sudden death or disease may also stem from my bow, especially for those who break sacred vows or violate my sanctuaries. I am one of the three virgin goddesses in Greek mythology, alongside Athena and Hestia, who vow to remain chaste for eternity. While the Titan Selene originally symbolized the moon, over time, I come to replace her. In the festival of Brauronia in my honor, young girls dress as bears and perform rituals symbolizing their transition from childhood to adulthood. I slink amongst the forest wilds with my diverse array of sacred animals.
