Athena, Goddess of Wisdom

65e3609f2c3b5423444de998

I was very excited to do this image as Athena is one of the most popular gods of Greek mythology, and for good reason. She shows up in many myths to assist heroes and is a very fascinating and wise goddess. As you can see from my sketches, I was playing with the idea of a twilight scene, but in the end, I went with the more optimistic daytime colors. I changed her dress from a lighter value to a darker value to provide more contrast with her light armor. A lot of modern illustrations tend to show Greek goddesses as pinup-style superheroes,  sensual and provocative, and showing a lot of skin and cleavage. I want to offer a more modest and elegant view of these characters, so I tend to keep them fairly clothed.

I am Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom, war, strategy, defense, city-state building, and crafts like pottery. After Zeus swallows my pregnant mother Metis due to a prophecy her child would overpower him, I am born from his head fully armed. Upon my chest plate armor (sometimes depicted as a shield), I wear Medusa's head on the infamous Aegis, used in battle as a protective amulet. You may see me referred to as "Pallas Athena," in honor of my childhood friend, Pallas, whom I accidentally, and tragically killed.
