Apollo, God of Prophecy

65e3609f2c3b5423444de995

As a companion piece to his twin sister Artemis, I chose to mirror their poses to create a symmetry to the pair of prints. In contrast to Artemis's cooler moonlit scene, here I wanted to emphasize the warm tones with his associations with the sun. This was a pivotal piece for me in the early stages of this project as it was one of the first where I integrated the color sketch into my step-by-step process. This made a world of difference in my ability to push the image in the direction I want in intuitive stages, making sure I'm happy with each stage along the way before moving forward. Like Demeter and the cult of Eleusis, I find Apollo's role in the Oracle of Delphi fascinating and chose to highlight that aspect of his myth in my portrayal.

I am Apollo, God of prophecy, oracles, and archery. I also have associations with art and music as I am the leader of the muses, those goddesses of artistic inspiration. Just as my twin sister Artemis is both patron and destructor of females, I am both healer of and harbinger of disease of males. Upon my back rests my sacred bow and arrows, while I strum the lyre gifted by my half-brother, Hermes. I defeat the serpent Python to claim the Oracle of Delphi, where my priestess, the Pythia, delivers my divine prophecies, bridging the gap between the gods and the mortal world.
