My Olympians Illustration series has been so much fun because I was challenged to portray such different tones and personalities, and here we have one of pure joy and revelry. As with the large retinues of Poseidon and Aphrodite, it was a great opportunity to learn about Dionysos's followers and his cult as well. As you can see from my sketch process, I took extra time in sketching out some of the reclining postures and dance poses, as they are not typical poses that I had done before. In the end, I wanted a very warm and inviting image, with sunlight pouring into a hidden forest glen. But beware, the Maenads lurk in the background to remind us of the dark side of ecstasy; the manic frenzy.
