Embarking on this illustrated book project over the last few years has been such a joy for many reasons; one of them being my introduction to Atalanta's tale. I was more familiar with tragic female characters like Medea, Cassandra, Clytemnestra, and Antigone; women who struggle with a lack of agency within the stricter confines of traditional gender roles as wives and daughters of powerful men. So I was pleasantly surprised to come across Atalanta besting men in physical games, joining quests, and even putting failed suitors to death! Yikes! It brings to mind the Amazon warrior women as well. These powerful characters who defy ancient feminine roles have left an indelible mark on countless generations, and continue to fascinate for good reason.
