One of the funnest parts about being an illustrator of world cultures and mythology is learning through my research. For example I had no idea that the Harpies were originally wind deities who originate from sea gods. In this piece, I wanted to emphasize the magical wonders of the sea, so I chose a color palette of navy and turquoise, but I also wanted to add some color contrast through pink and purple coral reefs. I liked the idea that some heavenly god rays would illuminate Nereus in the center, making him highlighted against a darker background, but his Nereid children, moving out of the light ray into the see, would be graphically dark silhouettes.
