Pandora's Jar

6634a374a0ec5b931aed86bf

I had already done a quick and rough color concept sketch of Pandora's jar some years ago, (which I will include in my process sketches here). So it was fun to revisit this topic with a deeper intention of a more classical Greek depiction of Pandora's wedding costume and Pithos jar. For the evils released, I tried to bring some variety to the "Substance" so the black liquid dripping down feels like tar, and the floating particles might give a feeling of plague. Within the rising cloud, I tried to give some variety to the symbols with bent and toiling figures and fearful faces in anguish.

I, Pandora, am created by Zeus as a punishment against Prometheus, who gifts mankind the flame from Olympus. I am formed from soil and water by Hephaestus, gifted with needlework and weaving from Athena, beauty and charm from Aphrodite, cunning and deceit from Hermes, and the jar of suffering from Zeus.

Hermes delivers me as a wedding gift to Prometheus’ brother, Epimetheus, who heartily accepts me. But when I open the jar out of curiosity, I release evils and strife into the world of mankind. I cover the jar before the final trait can escape: Hope. And thus, it remains for us mortals to use in the face of suffering.
