King Polydectes Banquet

6634a571c8d5a062efe1f582

I had a lot of fun exploring options to come up with this composition, where we are standing off the side of the throne, almost like we art witnessing it form the point of view of another of the king's soldiers. I always loved images like this in my myth and fairytale books as a kid: images of heroes and knights and kings and princesses at royal courts before they go off into wild lands to risk certain death. I find these types of royal castle environments endlessly enjoyable to design, with epic architecture and comforting lighting to create a warm, elegant, and lavish atmosphere.

I am lovingly raised into a fine young man by the fisherman, whose brother turns out to be the ruler of our new homeland; King Polydectes. One evening I am invited to a secret banquet for the king where aristocrats offer riches and fine horses in gifts of fealty. Unprepared and empty-handed, I step forward and offer to acquire anything the king wishes, even “the head of a dreaded gorgon,” I jokingly add. The hall echoes in chuckles. But the king does not laugh. KingPolydectes, secretly desiring my mother Danae and hoping to remove me, immediately agrees to my impossible suggestion. Keeping my composure, I gracefully bow and retire. How can I accomplish such an impossible task? I will need help from the gods.
