Five Ages of Mankind

6634a2e550233747e2b0e646

In this illustration, my goal was to clearly show the five different races of humankind in a mosaic composition and in chronological order from top to bottom. Some of the groups are stretching for the warmth of the gods while other ages turn away from the light, for example, the grey-blue second age. I show the current Iron Age at the bottom as too busy with petty squabbling amongst themselves to give proper attention to the gods. I think a little mountain geography could possibly make the image stronger to give it a sense of place, but as always, I'm trying to find the balance between too many detailed elements and yet still keeping the images simple and not overly fussy.

In Hesiod’s Poem “Works and Days,” he describes a lineage of the creation of humankind by the gods through five “ages.” In the Golden Age, humankind lives in harmony with the gods, free from sorrow, and their spirits become divine protectors. The Silver Age brings a sinful race that neglects the gods, leading Zeus to erase them in his wrath. The Bronze Age sees a race of brutal warriors, forged from ash trees, who destroy themselves through endless violence. In the Age of Heroes, demi-gods fight legendary battles, with the noblest rewarded with eternal peace in Elysium. Now, in the Iron Age, humans toil in misery, their lives marked by corruption and strife, forsaken by the gods.
