The Uncharted Seas

This was a challenging image based on the large number of characters, elements, and environments I needed to pack into the frame. I also wanted to design it so that a reader could click through the layers in a simple and chronological clockwise structure. In the sketch stage, I played with a different composition, where the islands faded off into the distance, which helped sell the feeling of a long and distant journey, but those furthest islands felt too small to convey the plot point visual elements. So, in the end, I sacrificed distance for a more compact composition where the events and characters would be more clearly represented with equal visual real estate.

I, Jason, arrive at King Pelias’ court with one sandal, fulfilling a prophecy that sets me on a perilous quest for the Golden Fleece. Leading the Argonauts; heroes like Heracles, Orpheus, and Peleus, we sail on the Argo, facing vengeful women on Lemnos, battling six-armed giants, and navigating seas with divine guidance. In Colchis, King Aites challenges me with fire-breathing bulls and Spartoi warriors, but Medea, under Eros’ spell, helps me conquer each trial. Together, we seize the Golden Fleece and flee, overcoming the Sirens’ songs, crossing deserts, and defeating Talos. In the end, we return home in glory with our quested prize, but my dark fate, intertwined with Medea, is far from over.
