This was a challenging image based on the large number of characters, elements, and environments I needed to pack into the frame. I also wanted to design it so that a reader could click through the layers in a simple and chronological clockwise structure. In the sketch stage, I played with a different composition, where the islands faded off into the distance, which helped sell the feeling of a long and distant journey, but those furthest islands felt too small to convey the plot point visual elements. So, in the end, I sacrificed distance for a more compact composition where the events and characters would be more clearly represented with equal visual real estate.
