Andromeda and the Sea Serpant

6634a70ea0774210ba14fa80

I had a lot of fun designing this iconic creature, Cetus. Leaning into the serpentine design, I chose to use the curves to my advantage in the composition to draw the eye up to the focal point of the central conflict. As an illustrator, I'm always trying to challenge myself with new and challenging compositions, which can surprise the viewer and create a "playground" for the eye to wander through. Shapes, spot colors, and values all have a hand in leading the eye through the hierarchy of levels of importance. Solving this puzzle is endlessly fascinating for the artist.

Having escaped with the Gorgon head, I fly home over the sea, but hear the cry of Andromeda, chained to a rock as a sacrifice. Her mother, Queen Cassiopeia, had boasted that Andromeda’s beauty surpassed the sea nymphs, angering them. Poseidon sends a flood and the sea serpent Cetus to punish the kingdom, and the oracle Ammon declares that only Andromeda’s sacrifice can save it. The moment I see the princess, I fall in love and vow to defeat the beast. After slaying it and turning her rival suitor, Phineus, to stone with Medusa’s head, Andromeda marries me, and we set off for Seriphos and whatever destiny awaits.
