Ballad of Mulan

66af268902c3453fc6a3ce47

Lockett studio partner, Dana Chen, suggested I do this image as she is of Chinese descent and was eager to see my rendition of this well-known folk poem. Most modern people know of the tale from the Disney animated film, and I was surprised to learn that the original tale is so short. Having been raised by a strong and independent woman, I’m a fan of these types of stories of women warriors holding their own in the realms of men, such as the Amazons or the female samurai Tomoe Gozen.

In ancient China during the Northern Wei dynasty, I, Mulan, sit weaving at home, troubled by news of war. When my elderly father is drafted, with no son to go in his place, I decide to do my duty as his child. Disguising myself as a man, I buy a horse and armor, quietly say farewell to my family, and set out, crossing the Yellow River and Black Mountain. I fight in many battles, proving myself as a soldier. After the war, the Khan honors me, but I only wish to return home. My family welcomes me, and I reveal my identity, changing into my old clothes. My soldier comrades, amazed to discover I am a woman, accept me as one of their own, just like the tale of two indistinguishable rabbits.
